2 MEN CHARGED IN HURT PARK RACIAL ATTACK

Roanoke police have charged two men in what they said was an "apparent racial assault" at the Hurt Park housing project last month.

Jeffrey Lynn Ruffin, 24, of the 3500 block of Ferncliff Avenue and Michael Lynn Willis, 20, whose address was unknown to police, were charged this week with malicious wounding.

They are charged with an April 26 attack on Gary Wayne Carter, 15.

Police said that Carter was walking on 18th Street Southwest at about 6 p.m. when he was approached by two black males. As a crowd began to gather, the man called Carter "white boy" and asked what he was doing in the neighborhood, police said.

At that point, a witness told police, the men threw Carter to the ground and began to "kick and stomp" him.

When police arrived a few minutes later, the 15-year-old was bleeding from his nose and left eye and had shoe prints on the left side of his face.

He was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for head injuries.
