SPIRITS ROUGH UP BUCCANEERS

Right fielder Kevin Roberson hit a home run and finished with four RBI to power the Winston-Salem Spirits to a 7-1 victory over the Salem Buccaneers on Friday night in Carolina League baseball.

Bucs pitcher Tim McDowell was outstanding through five innings, holding Winston-Salem to two hits. But McDowell lost it in the bottom of the sixth.

With one out, Paul Blair walked and Elvin Paulino delivered a hit-and-run single. Gary Scott singled home Blair, and Paulino scored on a wild pitch. Roberson's first homer of the season - a drive to right field - scored Scott and John Jensen, who was walked intentionally.

Roberson struck again in the eighth, driving in Jensen with a single to pad the Spirits' lead.

Winston-Salem starter Braz Davis turned in a solid performance, giving up four hits and one run in seven innings to earn the victory.

The Bucs' lone run came in the top of the first when third baseman Bruce Schreiber hit a one-out triple, and left fielder Domingo Merejo singled him home with two out. Salem managed just two hits the rest of the game.

The teams will meet again tonight, with Tim Wakefield (2-2, 2.70 ERA) on the mound for Salem against the Spirits' Jim Bullinger (1-4, 3.32 ERA).
