PANEL RECOMMENDS VA. 24 DUMP SITE

A citizens committee voted 7-2 Thursday to recommend that the Board of Supervisors select a 545-acre tract off Virginia 24 for Bedford County's new landfill.

The Citizens Advisory Committee, appointed two years ago by the supervisors to participate in choosing a new landfill site, endorsed the same site that the county's consultants had recommended last week.

The site, eight miles southwest of Bedford at Virginia 807 and Virginia 24, would be the least expensive available and last the longest for a landfill, consultants from Draper Aden Associates said. At a cost of about $22.5 million, a landfill there would last between 40 and 50 years.

Members of the committee who voted against the site favored a second location, still under consideration. That tract, 363 acres seven miles south of the city along Virginia 43, would cost $24.4 million and last 30 to 35 years.

Although they recommended the first site, the consultants also said the other could be suitable for a landfill.

The supervisors are expected to choose a site Tuesday night.
