POPS BEGINS WITH FIEDLER TRIBUTE

The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra's 1990 Picnic With the Pops series begins June 9 with "A Tribute to Arthur Fiedler."

The program will be conducted by Harry Ellis Dickson. He is associate conductor laureate of the Boston Pops, where Fiedler, who died in 1979, was principal conductor for 50 years.

Other Picnic With the Pops concerts are set for July 28 and Aug. 25. Bob McGrath of television's "Sesame Street" will be the guest star on July 28, leading the performance of such "Sesame Street" tunes as "Rubber Ducky," "If You're Happy" and "It's a Good, Good Morning Day." Students from a local dance school will take part in the show.

On Aug. 25, vocalists from Mill Mountain Theatre and a rhythm trio will perform classics like `Minnie the Moocher" and "Tuxedo Junction" in a program titled "Juke Box Saturday Night."

All three of the Saturday-evening pops concerts will be in the Salem Civic Center. Members of the audience can bring their own picnics or buy food at the civic center. No alcohol can be brought in, but mixed drinks as well as other beverages will be for sale.

Seating and serving begins at 5:30 p.m., with the music starting at 6:30.

Individual ticket prices range from $6 for general admission to $9 or $12 for table seats, and whole tables can be booked.

For information and reservations, call the Salem Civic Center at 375-3004 or 1-800-288-2122.
