COAL-STRIKE REPORT GAVE THE FULL PICTURE

WRITING for a newspaper must be a thankless task.

In response to your excellent special report, "Thunder in the coalfields" (April 29), I have seen only three comments to date. One (May 7) was from an Abingdon reader correcting your use of "flaunted" for "flouted." One (May 10) was from Pittston's chief executive officer charging an omission in coverage. One (May 10) was from Plowshare Peace Center representatives calling the report "well-researched, well-presented."

So far, your AQ (appreciation quotient) is only 33 percent.

I found the report most interesting, objective and informative. For the first time, I felt I was reading the complete story rather than bits and pieces. Dwayne Yancey, Don Petersen and associates deserve the Pulitzer Prize for this report.

Keep up the good work! DAN F. AMOS BLACKSBURG
