MORRIS WON'T REPEAT SINGLES TITLE

Washington and Lee's John Morris, bidding to become the first player in NCAA Division III history to repeat as men's singles champion, was defeated Saturday morning in his semifinal match at the 1990 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships at Swarthmore College.

Morris, the No. 1 seed, was dethroned by third-seeded Scott Flippin-Read of Washington College 6-2, 6-1.

Morris earned a measure of revenge in doubles play as he and partner Bill Meadows beat Flippin-Read and Larry Gewer, the No. 1 seeds, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) to advance to the final. They will face the No. 3 seeded team of Scott Milener and Robert Hession for the Division III doubles championship today.

Morris and Meadows beat Jeff Fieldhack and Doug Keen 7-5, 6-1 in their quarterfinal match earlier Saturday.

Morris, named Thursday as the NCAA Division III Senior Player of the Year, finished the season 22-6 in singles play. - Staff report
