HEAD-ON CRASH KILLS THREE NEAR FERRUM

Three people died Saturday evening as a result of a head-on collision on Virginia 40 near Ferrum.

State Police said the collision happened about 6:50 p.m. when a car driven by Stefan Darrell Helms entered a right-hand curve, slid off the left side of the road, came back into the highway and struck another vehicle.

Helms, 27, of Route 1, Boones Mill, was dead at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the second car, Janice Prillaman Scott, 34, of Route 2, Ferrum, also died at the scene.

Her daughter, Stacie Lynn Scott, 11, died about an hour later at Franklin Memorial Hospital.

The accident occurred just east of Virginia 963, a state police dispatcher said.

Trooper D.E. Burnette investigated the accident.
