WINSTON-SALEM BLASTS WAKEFIELD, BUCS 14-4

When Salem's Tim Wakefield is unable to get his knuckleball over the plate, the Buccaneers usually are in for a long evening.

Saturday night's game against the Winston-Salem Spirits was no exception.

Wakefield hit the shower after allowing five hits, three walks and nine earned runs in 1 innings, and the Spirits rocked the Bucs 14-4 in Carolina League action.

Winston-Salem took the lead on first baseman Elvin Paulino's two-run homer in the first inning. Wakefield escaped the inning without further damage, but his failing knuckler caught up with him in the second.

The Spirits scored eight runs in the inning, four on a grand slam by right fielder Kevin Roberson.

Saturday's game also featured a benches-clearing brawl in the seventh inning.

The altercation began when Spirits reliever John Gardner hit Mandy Romero with a pitch. Romero charged the mound. Both were ejected.
