EXPLOSION VICTIM TENTATIVELY IDENTIFIED

The body of a man killed in an explosion in a trailer in northern Wythe County on Saturday has been tentatively identified as that of Charlie Matney of Jolo, W.Va., Virginia state police said Sunday.

Police said the tentative identification is based on statements by witnesses who had seen Matney at the trailer before the explosion.

Matney owned the trailer, which was located at the foot of Walker Mountain just off U.S. 21 and U.S. 52 near the Bland County line.

T.B. Daniels, assistant special agent in charge of general investigations for the state police in Wytheville, said the blast destroyed the trailer.

The cause of the explosion has not been determined, he said. An investigation is continuing.

Matney apparently used the trailer as a base of operations occasionally for his well-drilling business, Daniels said.
