SPIRITS FINISH OFF DEMOLITION OF BUCS

Sunday was rerun night at Ernie Shore Field.

For the second straight game, the Winston-Salem Spirits tagged the Salem Buccaneers with an eight-run second inning en route to scoring 14 runs in Carolina League baseball. This time, the Spirits won 14-3.

Salem, which lost 14-4 on Saturday, took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles by Domingo Merejo and Mandy Romero and led 2-1 going into the bottom of the second.

Then, shaky defense and pitching helped doom Salem and starter John Latham. Elvin Paulino walked, Scott Taylor singled and Fernando Ramsey beat out an infield single to third to load the bases.

Jim Murphy then grounded to third, where Flavio Williams' misplay allowed two runs. A walk to Paul Blair loaded the bases again and that was followed by a run scoring wild pitch.

After Winston-Salem made it 7-2, Mike Pomeranz relieved Latham and gave up a run-scoring single to Scott Taylor before striking out Ramsey to end the inning.

The Spirits added five runs in the eighth off Chip Duncan.

Carolina League President John Hopkins attended the game to investigate the teams' brawl in Saturday's game, touched off when Romero charged the mound after being hit by a pitch. Hopkins did not announce any fines or suspensions Sunday night.
