Although he had a different partner, Washington and Lee tennis player John Morris found himself with a familiar title Sunday: national champion.

Morris and Bill Meadows won the NCAA Division III doubles championship Sunday at Swarthmore College. The eight-seeded pair beat third-seeded Scott Milener and Robert Hession of Rochester, 6-3, 6-4.

Last year, Morris and Bobby Matthews won the national doubles title, and Morris won the national singles title. Morris, a senior, tied the NCAA record for most overall titles with three.

Morris won the national singles title. Morris, a senior, tied the NCAA record for most overall titles with three. Shaun Miller of Gustavus Adolphus won the Division III singles titles in 1982 and doubles titles in '81 and '82.

It's the third national doubles championship in W&L's history. Ben Johns and Stewart Jackson won the championship in 1977.

On Sunday, Morris and Meadows broke their opponents three times in the first set. In the second set, the Generals' pair broke Milener and Hession in the match's final game. - Staff report
