PARTYGOERS RESIST POLICE WITH ROCKS

People in a large crowd pelted Roanoke police with rocks and bottles early Saturday morning as police attempted to break up a disruptive party, authorities said today.

One police officer was struck in the eye with a piece of flying debris, but apparently was not seriously injured.

Several gunshots were fired about 2 a.m. Saturday as 150 to 200 people gathered in the street on the 1900 block of Rorer Avenue Southwest.

Seven people, two of them juveniles, were charged with offenses such as disorderly conduct, impeding police, assaulting a police officer and carrying a concealed weapon.

Police gave the following account of what happened:

As an officer responded to reports of a loud party on Rorer Avenue at 2:05 a.m., he heard gunshots shortly before arriving.

As police arrived, they encountered a crowd of about 200 people, many of them standing in the street. Some of the people were smashing bottles on the pavement, police said.

As police moved in to try to establish order, some of the people began to throw rocks and bottles. Additional units were called to the scene before the situation was brought under control, police said.

Apparently no one in the crowd was injured.
