NEW PHONE COMPANY TO SERVE CRAIG AREA

A new utility, the New Castle Telephone Co., a subsidiary of a Chicago firm, will provide telephone service in Craig County and small parts of Giles and Montgomery counties. The ownership change for the territory was approved by the State Corporation Commission.

Service for the Paint Bank and New Castle exchanges will be transferred from Contel of Virginia to the new company. Service for the Newport exchange will be transferred to the Pembroke Telephone Cooperative. Rates will not change but the Pembroke co-op said it proposes to charge a smaller installation fee than is now charged.

The New Castle firm said it will establish an office in Craig County to respond to inquiries and accept bill payments. The company is a subsidiary of Telephone and Data Systems Inc., a Chicago holding company that owns Amelia Telephone Co. in Virginia and other operations across the nation. - Staff report
