FRANKLIN DEFEATS WOODBRIDGE

Shelley Bowles pitched a three-hitter and Pam Powell walked with the bases loaded in the 11th inning to give Franklin County a 3-2 victory against Woodbridge in the first round of the Northwestern Region softball tournament at the Eagles' LARC Field.

Franklin County's Bowles improved her record to 16-0 by outpitching Woodbridge's Kerry Suniega. Bowles went all 11 innings, striking out six, walking one and hitting two batters.

Suniega (13-7) struggled at times and pitched brilliantly at others. She walked 13 batters and surrendered six hits, but struck out 20 in 11 innings. Suniega's control problems lost the game for Woodbridge in the 11th.

Stephanie Morgan led off with a walk and Bowles struck out. On the strikeout, Morgan stole second. Missy Spradlin walked and a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third.

Beth Chitwood then lined out to Suniega, who almost doubled off Morgan at third. Dawn Webb then walked to load the bases and Powell walked to force in the winning run.

Franklin County had many more chances to win the game in regulation, but the Eagles left 11 runners on base in the first four innings.

The Eagles next play at Halifax at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The two semifinal winners in the Northwestern Region will automatically advance to the Group AAA Tournament.
