BUCS' SKID AT FOUR

Relief pitcher Tom Deller lost his control in the 10th inning and the Salem Buccaneers blew a four-run lead to lose 5-4 to Durham in a Carolina League baseball game Monday night.

Deller walked four batters in the 10th, including Popeye Cole with the bases loaded to allow the winning run. Salem lost its fourth consecutive game and fell to last place in the Northern Division.

The Buccaneers led 4-0 after 6 1/2 innings. Ben Shelton hit a one-out, solo home run in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. Another run scored when Mandy Romero hit a double-play grounder in the third.

Salem scored twice in the seventh when, with Shelton on third and Mike Huyler on second, Shelton was caught in a rundown. Both runners scored, however, when third baseman Edwin Alicea's throw hit Shelton in the head and bounced away.

Bucs starter Paul Miller breezed through six innings but allowed two hits and a walk to load the bases in the seventh, bringing on Butch Schlopy in relief. Cole pinch hit for D.C. Campbell and grounded a single up the middle to score two runs.

In the eighth, Schlopy walked two batters and Alicea sacrificed them to second and third. Brian Deak hit to Huyler at short, but the ball bounced off his glove into left field for two more runs to make it 4-4.
