CHIEFS SIGN FORMER CAV BARRY WORD

Former University of Virginia running back Barry Word signed a free-agent contract Monday with the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs.

Word, 25, was a third-round draft choice of the New Orleans Saints in 1986. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound fullback played in all 12 non-strike games that season, starting two.

In 1987, he rushed 36 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns, and caught six passes for 54 yards. He won a spot on the Saints' roster in 1988 but was placed on the retired-reserve list after two games.

The Saints waived him in June 1989, and he didn't play last season.
