VIOLENCE MARS PARK FESTIVAL IN DANVILLE

A weekend festival in a city park was marred by sporadic violence, including several cases of assault, that police called unprovoked rioting.

Most of the disturbances at the Festival in the Park late Saturday and early Sunday appeared to be caused by teen-agers and young men, police said.

Police Lt. Paul Heffinger said seven cases of assault and battery were reported as well as numerous cases of malicious damage.

Despite the unrest, festival-goers turned out in record numbers over the weekend. An estimated 120,000, some 20,000 more than the previous high, sent artists and craftsmen home happy, said Festival in the Park organizers. - Associated Press
