BRISTOL COUNCIL VOTES ON CONTRACT WITH TVA

The Bristol City Council is expected to vote tonight on whether to notify the Tennessee Valley Authority it will terminate its contract in 1995.

City officials said the move would allow the city to talk with Appalachian Power Co. about a possible switch.

Tom Adams, utilities general manager, said the city's TVA power bill for 1989 was $21.9 million. A comparable APCO bill, based upon the company's published rates, would have been $16.3 million for the same period, according to Adams.

He said the city's top six industries would save a combined $1.7 million annually if the city switched from the federal agency.

Bob Steffy, senior vice president for power for TVA, said Monday he was confident that when Bristol evaluated its sources of power, it would remain with TVA.

Memphis, Tenn., left TVA in 1955 but returned in 1962. Recently, Memphis, the agency's largest customer, evaluated TVA and decided to stay with it. - Associated Press
