FOUNDATION FINANCES ARE APPALLING

YOUR May 1 article on the River Foundation's financial situation was fascinating - and appalling.

Be it for-profit or non-profit, any corporation that takes such a cavalier attitude toward its debts to companies trying to "make a living," and toward its tax debt to the government, deserves nothing from the public but scorn. To learn that although the River Foundation has no qualms about not paying its bills, it continues to pay its management more than $360,000 a year, can only heap more scorn upon them and every member of the foundation's board of directors.

If Mr. Carter wishes to donate his half-million dollars and such companies as Dominion Bank and your newspaper wish to contribute $90,000 each, fine! Keep it for your private toy.

I, for one, will be keeping close watch on my representatives to Richmond and to Washington to see what they will do in the future regarding state and federal support of this project.

While there are people in Roanoke going to bed hungry or having no bed at all to go to, I will fight however I can to keep my taxes from lining the pockets of Messrs. Ewert, Burrow, and Gleason.
