CARBON DIOXIDE BLAMED IN STOWAWAYS' DEATHS

Two unidentified stowaways killed in a fire aboard a banana-laden cargo ship died from inhaling carbon dioxide, the state medical examiner's office says.

An automated firefighting system released the gas into the refrigerated cargo hold after a fire broke out early Sunday.

The cause of the fire has not officially been determined. Detective C.L. Bynum of the Norfolk Police Department said it is presumed the men started it to keep warm.
