VMI GETS DEMATHA'S SCHROYER

Heath Schroyer, co-MVP of the metro Washington championship basketball game, has become the first player from DeMatha High School to accept a grant-in-aid from VMI.

Schroyer, a 6-foot-3 big guard and small forward, averaged 13 points and five rebounds and was the second-leading scorer for the Hyattsville, Md., school, which finished 26-8.

"I think he's an excellent catch for VMI," said Morgan Wootten, DeMatha's coach. "I think what happens is that a lot of people go after our top kids, like [Duke signee] Kenny Blakeney, and our second guy often gets overlooked."

Schroyer was the leading 3-point shooter for the Stags, hitting 44 percent from beyond the arc, and converted 79 percent from the free-throw line. He was the team's sixth man as a junior.

VMI head coach Joe Cantafio and assistant Pete Strickland both served on Wootten's staff, as did former VMI coach Marty Fletcher, but Schroyer is the first DeMatha basketball player to cast his lot with the Keydets. Schroyer picked VMI over Navy.

The signing period ended May 15, which means Schroyer is not bound by a letter-of-intent.

"He was talking to Navy," Wootten said, "but he's definitely going to VMI."
