L.F. PAYNE UNOPPOSED FOR CONGRESS

Fifth District Democrats have tapped incumbent Rep. L.F. Payne to seek another term in Congress.

Payne, who has no opposition in the Nov. 6 election, said Tuesday he considered the unopposed nomination a vote of confidence.

Because no other Democrat publicly showed interest in the job, nomination of the 44-year-old Nelson County millionaire and developer of the Wintergreen ski resort bypassed the usual route by which party convention delegates select a candidate.
