SHENANDOAH LIFE RAISES PRE-TAX GAIN

Shenandoah Life Insurance Co. raised its first-quarter pre-tax gain to $2.06 million from $427,000 a year ago. The Roanoke company said its individual sales for the quarter more than tripled to $1.5 million from $446,000. Group profits were $718,000, up from a loss of $31,000. Annuities sales were down by $180,000 because of increased reserves required by a large sales volume.

Total annualized premiums for individual life and health policies increased 24.9 percent to more than $1.7 million. Shenandoah Life said it has again received an A+ Superior rating, the highest in the industry given by the A. M. Best Co., a major insurance rating service. The company has received this rating since Best began issuing it in 1975.
