SALEM PITCHERS FALTER IN LOSS TO LYNCHBNURG

The good news for the Salem Buccaneers during the their current swoon is that they are hitting the ball and scoring runs. Unfortunately, the Bucs' opponents are having more success against Salem's pitching staff.

It was Lynchburg's turn Thursday night to feast on Buccaneers pitching. The Red Sox had 18 hits and dealt Salem its seventh consecutive Carolina League baseball loss 10-9 at Municipal Field.

Catcher Paul Williams hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and had six RBI to pace Lynchburg (23-18).

Ben Shelton had a pair of two-run homers among the Bucs' 13 hits.

Williams hit a first-inning grand slam off Bucs starter Tim Wakefield to give the Red Sox a 4-0 lead. Then, after Salem (15-28) rallied to an 8-5 lead, Williams' two-run homer off reliever Brent Honeywell highlighted a five-run sixth inning for Lynchburg.

Honeywell (2-2) gave up five runs on six hits in the sixth and picked up the loss. Red Sox reliever Rennie Scott (2-3), who shut down the Bucs after they picked up five runs in the third inning, gained the victory.

The Bucs' could be getting some pitching relief. The Pittsburgh Pirates have assigned pitchers Bobby Underwood and Stan Fansler to Salem.

Underwood, a 23-year-old left-hander, was 3-1 and had a 3.12 earned-run average with the Augusta (Ga.) Pirates of the Class A South Atlantic League.

Fansler, 25, is coming in from extended spring training. He was in Salem last season on rehabilitation for bursitis in his right shoulder. The right-hander was the Pirates' second selection in the 1983 draft and started five major-league games in 1986. He has had shoulder problems since 1987.

\ BUCSHOTS: To make room for Fansler and Underwood, Pittsburgh released Keith Raisanen and Brian "Bam Bam" Morrison. In 50 at-bats, Raisanen hit .120 and struck out 22 times. Morrison, who was acquired in a trade with Toronto, hit .183 with 25 strikeouts in 60 at-bats with the Bucs. . . . Pitcher John Latham (1-4) was reassigned to Augusta. . . . The Bucs will hold a free youth baseball clinic from 5 pm to 6:30 p.m. before tonight's game.
