POLICE ARREST FLA. MAN AFTER BANK ROBBERY

Police responding to a silent alarm arrested a Gainesville, Fla., man Thursday afternoon moments after a Williamson Road bank was robbed, authorities said.

William David Anderson, 39, was being held in Roanoke City Jail Thursday evening in lieu of a $25,000 bond.

He faces charges of armed robbery and entering a bank with a deadly weapon, according to court records.

Police said Anderson entered a Sovran Bank branch at 5102 Williamson Road NW about 3:30 p.m., brandished a handgun at tellers and demanded cash.

Anderson is accused of taking $945 from a teller before fleeing on foot.

He was found walking near the intersection of Williamson and Hershberger roads before being arrested by officers J.A. Meador and D.L. Hodges.

Anderson is scheduled for an arraignment this morning in Roanoke General District Court.

Police said Thursday's robbery was the first in the city in more than a year.
