PITTSTON SEMINAR IRKS UMW

The Pittston Coal president says senior management training sessions called "How to Stay Union-Free" were not at all what the title implies.

But Mike Odom announced this week that the seminar program has been suspended for now to avoid any misunderstanding with the United Mine Workers.

Pittston and the UMW agreed on a contract early this year following a 10 1/2-month strike.

Odom said the program was one aimed at improving relationships between supervisors and hourly workers and providing information to supervisors at non-union Pittston Coal Group operations on their legal obligations.

The seminar was "erroneously titled," Odom said.

"We were pretty disturbed about having them schedule these type of classes," said Donnie Lowe, the new president of Virginia UMW District 28. - Southwest bureau
