VA. ROADS IN A JAM, TECH REPORT SAYS

A report has concluded that Virginia has major road problems with traffic that, in some respects, is worse than the better-known congestion in California.

The report was commissioned by Virginia Tech to help educators and economic development officials reach common goals. "The state has a very small number of miles of roadway and a very large number of licensed drivers who are driving an even larger number of cars a very large number of miles each year," said the report, prepared by Harold L. Hodgkinson of the non-profit Institute for Educational Leadership.

According to the report released Thursday, Virginia ranks seventh in vehicle miles traveled per licensed driver each year, with 13,137 miles.

Virginia also ranks fifth in the number of automobiles registered per 1,000 drivers, with a figure of 663.
