LAWYER APPOINTED TO SCHOOL BOARD IN FRANKLIN COUNTY

A Boones Mill lawyer was appointed Friday to a four-year term as Blackwater District representative on the Franklin County School Board.

Shirley Bowman Jamison, 45, was appointed to succeed Linda Barnhart, who stepped down after two terms.

The Franklin County School Board Selection Commission chose Jamison over Thomas W. Rickard, public relations director for Ferrum College. Her term will begin July 1.

A third candidate, Sarah G. McDaniel, withdrew because her daughter's application to work as a teacher with the school system raised a possible conflict of interest.

Jamison is a former teacher and has been active in the Boones Mill Elementary PTA. She and her husband, Clark, have two children at the school.

The commission also reappointed Kathleen Holt to represent the Rocky Mount District. She was unopposed.

Holt, director of corporate relations at Ferrum, was first appointed to the board in 1980.
