TAXES BETTER THAN ROBBING OUR CHILDREN

GEORGE Will's excellent article on the "tax trap" (Commentary Page, May 14) implies that he, too, assumes that any official supporting a tax increase will find his job in jeopardy. But surely there must be some other citizens who are more mature than this administration. As that old Scotsman, Farquhar, said more than 200 years ago, "When the people in a democracy learn that they can vote themselves money from the treasury, that will be the end of democracy."

I would like to avoid that sad end. If we want the maximum of social services, so be it - but we had better learn to pay for it. Taxes must go up, or we are robbing our children blind and leaving them a bankrupt country.

I will vote for those seeking a tax increase and against this administration that insults my intelligence. I may wince, yes, but I will willingly pay added taxes. Perhaps we need an organization of like-minded people to help those of this administration toward mature avowal of what they already know in their craven hearts. ALFRED SKROBISCH BOONES MILL
