GRAYSON TAKES TITLE IN BASEBALL

Not often is the key figure in a 21-run baseball game a pitcher.i

Chris Lundy, a hard-throwing right-hander from Grayson County not previously celebrated for his control, came in in relief and pitched effectively when nobody else could Friday. For that reason, the Blue Devils were able to hold fast for a 12-9 victory over Bath County in the Group A Region C championship game.

"Words just don't explain what he did," Grayson County coach Ed Goodson said. "He just blew them away. And he's really had trouble this year, sometimes walking four or five batters in a row."i

Lundy retired the last 12 batters in a potent lineup, striking out the side in the fourth. He got some help. The Devils turned a double play to end the fifth, their second. Third baseman Wes Billings snagged a couple of line drives in the sixth.i

"Our pitchers were having trouble and Coach told me to go warm up," said Lundy, a senior. "I felt good warming up and I told him I was ready. I was determined to win this game."i

The win went to Stason Jennings(5-0). He gave up seven of the Chargers' 10 hits and three runs.i

Grayson County (16-4) plays host to the Region D runner-up, J.I. Burton, Tuesday in the state quarterfinals. Bath County (19-3) goes to the Region D champion, St. Paul. St. Paul defeated J.I. Burton 3-2 for the Region D title.i

Grayson County erased a 2-0 deficit with a nine-run second inning.i

Bath responded with six runs on five hits to close to 9-8. Keswick Phillips hit a grand slam for his 14th homer of the year.i

Grayson answered with back-to-back homers from Darren Montgomery, the No.9 batter, and Chuckie Owen in the third. Montgomery had two hits and three RBI.
