ELDRIDGE, MARGARET L.

Mrs. Margaret LaValla Eldridge, of Fincastle, died Friday morning, May 25, 1990, of complications from a struggle with cancer. Mrs. Eldridge was the former Registrar at Hollins College. She joined the Hollins staff in 1953 and retired in 1989. During her 37 years as Registrar, she served with six different presidents of Hollins College. In 1989, she was awarded the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for her service to Hollins. Mrs. Eldridge was born in Bethel, Conn., on September 27, 1923. She was a graduate of Barnard College in New York City. Mrs. Eldridge was the widow of Ralph W. Eldridge. Mr. Eldridge was the founder of Salem Tool, Inc. They were married in 1951, and Mr. Eldridge preceded her in death in 1981. Mrs. Eldridge is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Laurel Wampler of Blacksburg; and Mrs. Margaret Regenold of McDonough, Ga.; one stepson, Mr. R. W. Eldridge, Jr., of Canyon Country, Calif.; one brother, Mr. John LaValla of Pittsburgh, Penn.; one granddaughter, Miss Emily Ann Wampler of Blacksburg; one stepgranddaughter, Miss Mary Frances Wampler, Blacksburg; two nieces and two nephews. The family will receive friends at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel Monday evening from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held Wednesday morning, May 30, 1990, at 10:30 a.m. in the Jesse Ball DuPont Chapel at Hollins College. A family graveside service will be held Tuesday morning, May 29, 1990, in Evergreen Burial Park. Mrs. Eldridge's family wishes to thank her friends for their special help and many kindnesses during her illness, especially Delsie Snead Deisher, who cared for Mrs. Eldridge for several months. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Eldridge's family suggests contributions be made the American Cancer Society.
