SMYTH NEWS VETERAN RETURNS

Charles W. Martin Jr., who started his newspaper career reporting news and sports for the Smyth County News, has returned in a higher capacity to that paper and two others.

He has been named associate editor of Community Newspapers of Southwest Virginia, which also includes the Wytheville-based Southwest Virginia Enterprise and the weekly Bland Messenger. The Smyth and Wythe county papers are published twice a week.

Martin, a Marion native, has worked as a managing editor of the Martinsville Bulletin, Kingsport (Tenn.) Times and Bristol Herald Courier and telegraph and city/state editor of the Roanoke Times. Most recently, he has been editor of the Hilton Head (S.C.) News.

He and his wife, Lucy, will live in Adwolfe in Smyth County. He will be coordinating news coverage among the three papers as well as doing editing and writing.
