SOME TIPS TO HELP YOU START RECYCLING

If you're considering recycling household trash, here are some preparation tips to help you:

Thoroughly rinse all recyclables (except paper and cardboard, of course) to remove food and other residue.

Remove all lids.

You can leave labels on metal cans, glass bottles, and jars.

If you want to separate metal items, test to determine if a can is made of steel or aluminum by touching the side with a magnet. The magnet will stick to steel.

What not to recycle: Not all products made from paper, glass, metal, or plastic can be recycled efficiently by local programs. But you may find a scrap dealer who will take such items as windows, light bulbs, plastic toys, and building materials.

The previous information is from Good Housekeeping magazine.

Rattles recalled

A California toy company has recalled 262 baby rattles with small parts it said could choke or cut young children.

Small World Toys recalled its yellow plastic Spinflower Rattles because the toy may break apart when dropped, "releasing small beads," the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in announcing the recall. In addition, the rattle's flower petals may also break off, producing sharp points.

The rattles, sold nationwide since January 1988, were packaged in a clear plastic carrying case with a label marked "Fischerform."
