BLACKSBURG HIGH BANDS PLAN CONCERT

The Blacksburg High School Symphonic and Concert Bands and the Blacksburg Middle School Advanced Band will present their spring concert on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Blacksburg High School Auditorium.

The concert will feature concert saxophonist James Houlik, artist in residence, as well as the premier performance of "Excursions to Blacksburg" by Robert Leist, composer in residence.

Houlik has performed around the world from Carnegie Hall to Theater Wielki in Warsaw to Jujiya Hall in Kyoto.

More than 60 works have been written for him. Houlik serves as professor of saxophone at the North Carolina School of Arts.

Leist, an alumnus of the Julliard School of Music and Columbia University, has been arranger for the Goldman Band of New York, Director of the Princeton University Band, and composer in residence at James Madison University.

The Blacksburg High bands recently returned from a trip to Boston where they won several trophies at the New England Music Festival.

Admission to the spring concert is free.
