MISSING STUDENT'S CAR FOUND

A car belonging to a Virginia Commonwealth University student who has been missing along with a friend since May 19 has been found in the city.

Richmond police said they found a white Ford Escort belonging to Deborah Ferguson, 21, of Fairfax County, about 8 p.m. Sunday in the city's north side.

"It looks suspicious for her car to be in North Side," Detective Douglas Cleavert said Saturday. "She's from the Fan [district], so I don't know if she has friends in North Side or not."

Cleavert said that James Sherrin, 20, a friend of Ferguson who also has been missing since the weekend of May 18, left behind "a lot of belongings," including his wallet.

James Ferguson described Sherrin as a former boyfriend of his daughter's.

"They were seen together on Friday evening [May 18]. Then she called and talked with one of her girlfriends on Saturday. The friend thought she was calling from her apartment and that she was alone," Ferguson said.

He said he and his wife had tried to call their daughter several times since May 16 and had gotten the answering machine. "We left messages, but she didn't call back," he said.

"She's been doing a lot of work on her art, trying to get ready for an exhibit in June. We thought she was working over at the art department at VCU," he said.

Ferguson said his daughter also had not contacted the Tobacco Co. Restaurant, where she works as a waitress and hostess.

"When we got to her apartment Friday, we found her cat. She's never gone anywhere without making arrangements for the cat. Her wallet and credit cards are here. It looked as though she had left planning to be gone only a short while," he said.
