EXPLORE TOUR: TREAT IN STORE

APPROXIMATELY 150 secondary students and their teachers from the Bedford County Public Schools American Studies classes spent March 16 at the Explore Park in Roanoke. Joyce Waugh, public-information officer and property manager for Explore, arranged for the students to move through six different activities featuring:

1. Preservation/log hewing/American chestnuts/buffalos by Ren Heard;

2. Native American activities by a third-generation Cherokee, Joanne Pendleton;

3. A knife-throwing exhibit presented by Donald Pendleton that included a description of how important these skills were to early native Americans and settlers;

4. Native American ways of living, thinking, and survival on the land presented by Dan Abbott in handmade clothing;

5. A spinning exhibition of wool into thread by Charlene Bailey;

6. A tour by Susan Bright of the future Blue Ridge town highlighting the 1750-1850 town by focusing on a number of preserved buildings in the area, as well as crafts that will be handmade there.

The tours provided an enjoyable and excellent educational experience for the students. Mrs. Waugh's staff volunteered their time to give the presentations, and they are to be commended for their enthusiasm and expertise. If this sample of the Explore Project indicates its future development, not only students but adults of the area have a treat in store.
