HOLIDAY TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS CLAIM 12 IN VIRGINIA

Twelve people were killed on Virginia highways during the long holiday weekend, state police said. Sixteen people died on the state's roads during the previous holiday weekend.

State police Sgt. N.W. Hampton said two people were killed in Norfolk about 3 a.m. Sunday when their car ran off Interstate 64, hit a bridge, flipped and plunged 25 feet onto Sewell's Point Road. The car landed on its top and burst into flames, Hampton said.

The victims were identified as Lisa Montalvo, 34, of Fort Bragg, N.C., and Linda Scott, age unknown, of Brooklyn, N.Y. Montalvo was the driver. Neither victim was wearing seat belts, Hampton said.

Another accident in Norfolk claimed the life of Tad Leonard McMullen, 19, a sailor stationed aboard the USS Normandy. Hampton said the motorcycle McMullen was riding ran off a city street and hit a utility pole about 11:40 p.m. Saturday.

Hampton said the inclement weather may have been responsible for the decrease in traffic fatalities.
