SAFECRACKER GETS $7,000 FROM LODGE

A burglar pried open a safe and took more than $7,000 in cash and merchandise from the Covington Moose Lodge early Monday, authorities said.

Alleghany County Sheriff's Investigator Dale Muterspaugh said the intruder scaled a telephone pole and snipped a wire to a burglar alarm before entering.

About $6,000 in cash was taken from the safe and several lockers as well as about $1,000 in satellite television equipment.

The burglar gained entry to the money by prying open the back door, an office door and the safe. Police, who recovered some evidence, are following several leads in and are offering a reward through Alleghany Crimestoppers, Muterspaugh said.

The Moose Lodge is on U.S. 60 three miles west of Covington.
