S. AFRICAN PRESIDENT POSTPONES VISIT TO U.S.

South African President F.W. de Klerk on Tuesday indefinitely postponed his June trip to the United States out of fear of a controversy over its timing - preceding the arrival of black nationalist leader Nelson Mandela - would ruin his state visit.

After it was disclosed earlier this month that de Klerk would hold talks with President Bush on June 18, a week before Mandela meets Bush,anti-apartheid activists promised to mount mass demonstrations against de Klerk. Some members of Congress also perceived the scheduling to be a snub of the black leader and said they would refuse to meet de Klerk.
