GOVERNOR GIVES TIPS TO HELP ENVIRONMENT

Gov. Douglas Wilder urged Virginians on Tuesday to drive less, take shorter showers and avoid using lawn chemicals.

"In preserving our environment for our posterity, there are any number of simple choices each of us makes on a daily basis - simple choices with profound consequences," Wilder told the Richmond Rotary and Kiwanis clubs.

"Every person makes a difference," he said in prepared remarks. "The answers are all around us: driving less; carpooling; taking shorter showers; not using harmful chemicals on our lawns; and buying biodegradable products."

Wilder ordered his office and state agencies to begin recycling paper in April. He said 26 state agencies have started recycling.

"I hope that community groups will continue to show this same kind of leadership in organizing recycling programs of their own," the governor said.

"If we take the time and make the effort to organize such programs - and make it as convenient as possible to take action - people will follow our lead."
