PERCY KEELING, FORMER YMCA DIRECTOR, DIES

Percy T. Keeling, who worked with three generations of youth at the YMCA Family Center in Northwest Roanoke, died Sunday. He was 62.

After working for 34 years at what was known as the Hunton YMCA - 30 as executive director - Keeling retired in 1988. His retirement came as negotiations were under way to make the small, formerly all-black YMCA a satellite branch of the Central YMCA in downtown Roanoke.

Keeling was 7 when his father first took him to the Hunton YMCA. In 1954, he took a job as youth director there. Four years later, he became executive director.

A Roanoke native, Keeling attended Lucy Addision High School and received a degree in physical education from Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C.

He served with the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War.

He was a member of Sweet Union Baptist Church.

Fizer Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
