The United States Olympic Committee's year-round drug testing program will cost more than $1 million and involve 4,400 athletes in 37 different sports.

The program is part of a joint U.S.-Soviet agreement for year-round testing that replaces a system in which testing was done primarily at specific competitions.

The USOC, based in Colorado Springs, Colo., said the testing will be done at 197 sites, including most domestic competitions, in addition to the the U.S. Olympic Festival and the Goodwill Games. It said about $842,000 of the $1 million will be designated specifically for testing during competition and at training sites.

However, the USOC said it must still make final plans with the governing bodies of the sports involved. It said it expects that to be completed by early July.
