GREECE AGREES TO LET U.S. BASES REMAIN

Greece and the United States initialed a new defense pact Wednesday that will allow U.S. military bases to remain on Greek soil for the next eight years.

The agreement ended nearly a year of uncertainty over the fate of the bases.

The United States has four bases and about 20 smaller units around the country but is closing two bases in a worldwide cost-cutting drive.
