CHRYSLER'S NO. 2 QUITS TO HEAD UAL

Gerald Greenwald, vice chairman of the Chrysler Corp. and heir apparent to Lee Iacocca, resigned Wednesday and is likely to become chief executive of UAL Inc., owner of United Airlines.

Greenwald is the choice of unions representing UAL employees, who are leading a $4.36 billion buyout of the airline.

His negotiations with representatives of the unions had been rumored for weeks.

But Greenwald several times denied the rumors, Chrysler spokesmen said.

A Chrysler spokesman said he did not know whether there would be any immediate changes in top management. "This is all pretty new to us," said Arthur Liebler, vice president of public relations.

The pilots, machinists and flight attendants unions have been under pressure to hire top executive management so that bankers will feel confident enough to lend the money for the buyout.
