BUCCANEERS, KEYS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER

Pinch hitter Tim Hines delivered a bases-loaded triple in the top of the eighth inning Wednesday, helping the Salem Buccaneers gain a split of a doubleheader with the Frederick Keys in Carolina League baseball.

Hines' hit gave the Bucs a 4-1 victory in the first game, but the Keys bounced back in the nightcap, winning a pitchers' duel 1-0.

Tim Wakefield went the distance for Salem in the second game, giving up three hits and striking out seven. Zachary Kerr was up to the challenge for the Keys. Kerr scattered four hits and struck out eight en route to his seventh victory of the season.

The Bucs threatened in the seventh inning, but failed to capitalize on singles by Darwin Pennye and Ben Shelton. Kerr got Mike Huyler to ground out and struck out Chris Estep to end the game.

The loss spoiled a fine performance by Wakefield (2-4), who used a dancing knuckleball and a slow curve to keep the Keys off balance. He gave up a double to Ed Horowitz in the third inning, a run-scoring single to Tony Beasley in the fifth and a single to Ken Shamburg in the sixth.

A pair of walks came back to haunt Wakefield in the fifth. Free passes to Pete Rose Jr. and Horowitz set the stage for Beasley's game-winning hit.

Pitching also dominated the opener. Frederick left-hander Arthur Rhodes was overpowering, striking out 16 in seven innings. He gave up five hits and allowed a run when he walked Ben Shelton with the bases loaded in the third inning.

Salem starter Bobby Underwood, making his first appearance since being called up from Augusta (Ga.) of the South Atlantic League, struck out six and gave up seven hits. The Keys scored their lone run in the second inning.

With the score tied at 1, Salem put together the winning rally when Bruce Schreiber and Pennye singled to start the eighth inning. A sacrifice by Mandy Romero moved the runners, and pinch hitter Domingo Merejo was walked intentionally to load the bases.

Hines, batting for Estep, lined a pitch into the alley in right-center field, clearing the bases. His hit came off Todd Stephan, who relieved Rhodes to begin the eighth inning.

Stephan (3-2) was removed after giving up three hits and walking one in a third of an inning.
