IN SCHOOL

TANDY TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARS, a national program designed to recognize academic excellence, especially in the areas of mathematics, science and computer science, announced the teacher and student recipients of its cash scholarships.

Of 100 teacher finalists, two from the Roanoke Valley area - Wayne S. Morgan of Glenvar High School and Susan L. Hudson of Staunton River High School - were awarded checks for $2,500.

Of 100 student finalists, six were from this area - Melony B. Martin, Glenvar; Jason J. Thomas, James River; Jeffrey K. Baker, Lord Botetourt; Kevin G. Nordt, North Cross School; Elizabeth A. Beckner, Staunton River; and Scott S. Carter, William Byrd - each received a $1,000 scholarship.

In addition, the top 2 percent of each participating high school's senior class was recognized for overall academic excellence. They are: Melony B. Martin, Mitchell A. Semones from Glenvar; Karla L. Miller, Jason J. Thomas from James River; Jeffrey K. Baker, April D. Brown, Mitzi L. Garman, Christopher D. Obenshain from Lord Botetourt; Nicole A. Basile from North Cross School; Elizabeth A. Beckner, Paul R. Brown, Kein B. Galliher, Erica S. Thompson from Staunton River; and Jennifer M. Ball, Timothy M. Beirne, Scott S. Carter, Stacey L. Edmunds, Catherine P. Zimmerman from William Byrd.

\ ALTHEA POLK and JEAN JACKSON were recipients of awards during the state conference for the Council of Exceptional Children. Polk, supervisor of special education for Roanoke, received the Kuhn Barnett Award. Jackson, a special education teacher at Huff Lane Elementary School, received the Jennie Brewer Award.

\ PENNY GOODALL, a member of the board of trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, recently participated with U.S. Secretary of Education Lauro F. Cavazos in the first major meeting of education and business leaders since the National Governors Association released in the new "Goals for Education."
