BEDFORD RESIDENT INDICTED IN SLAYING

A 32-year-old Bedford man was indicted Thursday on charges that he killed Clarence Thurman Calloway after a night of drinking and arguing.

James Edward Jones is scheduled for trial Sept. 6 in Bedford County Circuit Court.

At a preliminary hearing last week, police testified that Jones confessed to the killing minutes after he was arrested April 7.

Calloway, 33, was found dead at 430 King St. at 9:48 p.m. April 7. An hour later, Jones was arrested at his mother's home on Mills Street.

Jones' attorney, Bedford County Public Defender Webster Hogeland, has said he plans to present evidence that the killing was in self-defense.
