The Old Dominion Electric Cooperative and Virginia Power Thursday awarded a $358 million contract for a coal-fired power generating unit to a consortium of Westinghouse and three other companies. The 393-megawatt, pulverized coal-fired unit will be constructed at the Clover power station in Halifax County.

Brendle's Inc. of Elkin, N.C., reported a gain of about $7 million to $48.2 million in first-quarter sales and a loss of $2.1 million, compared with a loss of $1.9 million a year ago.

Prices farmers get for raw products increased 2 percent from April to May, raising the overall commodity index 3.4 percent above a year ago, the Agriculture Department said Thursday. Higher prices for hogs, corn, hay, broilers and lettuce fueled the increase over the last month.
