Brendle's Inc. of Elkin, N.C., reported a gain of about $7 million to $48.2 million in first-quarter sales and a loss of $2.1 million, compared with a loss of $1.9 million a year ago.
Prices farmers get for raw products increased 2 percent from April to May, raising the overall commodity index 3.4 percent above a year ago, the Agriculture Department said Thursday. Higher prices for hogs, corn, hay, broilers and lettuce fueled the increase over the last month.
