RICHMOND FAMILY CLAIMS $8.6 MILLION

A Greek immigrant who owns a local restaurant brought his family Thursday to Virginia Lottery Department headquarters to claim an $8.6 million Lotto prize, the biggest since the game began in January.

Paul Makris, 52, originally from Sparta, Greece, and his family received a check for $329,277 after taxes. They will get 19 additional after-tax annual payments of $326,800.

Makris, whose family owns the Brookside Seafood Restaurant in Richmond, had the winning combination of 3-16-18-24-37-39 in Saturday night's Lotto drawing. The ticket was purchased earlier in the day by Makris' 22-year-old daughter, Angie, at a suburban 7-Eleven store.

"I felt lucky because Saturday was my birthday, so I asked my daughter to buy me Lotto tickets," said Makris' wife, Niki, 44.

Angie Makris just graduated from Virginia Tech. The family includes another daughter, Francie, 17, who just completed her junior year of high school. The entire family works at the restaurant.
