POSITIVE NEWS IS OVERLOOKED

HOW SAD to have seen so little media coverage on a grand award winner in the International Science and Engineering Fair.

With tough competition from many science-oriented states as well as from Northern Virginia and Tidewater, Roanoke City comes up a winner, and so little news. Headlines and editorials bombard us regarding the lack of science education in this country. Roanoke City's science fair had 114 entrants citywide and an international winner, and no news.

Perhaps we are our own worst enemies. We preach living by positive example, yet we make so little of positive achievements, of positive examples for our young. The current philosophy seems to say if you want recognition or publicity, then do something rotten and you'll get it! MARYBLAIR BYRD ROANOKE
